Skin Packaging vs. Blister Packaging

Many people are confused between the skin packaging and blister packaging. But, both are not the same things. However, a few similarities between them are their stuff, some artwork, looks, and their purposes.

Well, in this article, we will find out some significant differences and uses of skin packaging and blister packaging. These are not new terms for the packaging industrialists or the businesses who are dealing in packing in e-commerce; however, many of you are still confused about the meaning and difference; therefore, let's see in detail.

Skin Packaging

Skin packaging is a type of carded packs. They are almost the same as blister packing; therefore, people usually seem confused between both of them. Both have similar appearances. But, their applications are primarily different.

As I mentioned above, both packings have used the same materials. Thus, skin packagings have made of board and have plastic covering. The fundamental difference between both of them is its locking up structure. Skin packaging has sealed with a vacuum sealing machine, while blister packs have films and back attached. Another difference of the skin packaging is it can be customized. You can ship them as they are; otherwise, you can change their looks and cut through the die-cutting machine. As far as I know, this is one of the best features of skin packs, as custom-cutting allows it to remove the excess material and unnecessary edges from the final look. Moreover, it gives a plain and smooth appearance to the packaging. It makes the packing appealing and attractive.

The known examples of skin packaging are salmon packs, smoked fish fillets packs, and some other seafood packaging.

Blister Packaging

The two significant ingredients for the manufacturing of blister packaging are blister board and blister plastics.

Blister boards are common paperboards and cut into rectangular shapes. These are printable sheets, and you can imprint graphics and the brand’s logo and name on them. Moreover, manufacturers made them with plastic and some other materials like aluminum film. Well, these films have used for the packaging of medicines and pharmaceuticals. But, for blister pack backers, the blister board is the suitable stuff.

The common examples of the blister packaging are fishing lures, small hardware products, pills’ packaging, drugs, capsules, toothbrushes, toys, candies, and some hair products.

Skin Packaging vs. Bister Packaging

Skin packaging has a surlyn film wrapped around the product. Moreover, it has sealed with a vacuum machine. Through the device, the packs have locked up to the backing boards. While, blister packaging has a hardboard, called blister; moreover, you cannot seal with a vacuum.

For skin packaging, you will need a vacuum sealer machine and a die-cutting device. Moreover, you might need some other techniques to separate the product from its master sheet. But, for blister packs, you only need a sealer.

Which One is Right Packaging for your Products?

Before selecting the packaging for your products, you should ask a few significant queries from yourself and look at the need for your things. Then, you will be able to answer and choose the right one for the products.

The questions could be:

  • Do your products have sharp or pointed edges?
  • If yes, then you should select blister packaging for your products.
  • Do you need to pack food that can spoil?
  • If yes, then you should select skin packaging.

What is your budget?

If you have a low, then you should go for blister packaging; however, if you have a high amount to expense, then you can choose skin packaging, as you have to buy a vacuum sealer and a die-cutting machine too.

Does “Speed to Market” matter for you?

If yes, then you should select blister packaging.
